“Being is a duty, even if it's just for a moment!”

What was going on in Weimar on 7 November 1775? And was Goethe a runner?

Whether it was actually exactly five o'clock in the morning on a gloomy 7th November when Johann Wolfgang von Goethe got out of the carriage after his arrival in Weimar is open to debate. What is certain beyond doubt is that Goethe arrived in the cultural capital of Weimar in 1775 and took German literature to a new level. Weimar itself became the epitome of German culture. What we also know: Goethe loved physical activity and was said to be a fan of ice skating. He hiked, but probably didn't run, as we understand it. He would undoubtedly have taken part in such an innovative experience as the Goethe.Culture.Race.

“I feel so far away and yet so close, And say only too gladly: there I am! there!”

There is a distance for every taste

We have something for every ability level in our range of four distances. Long-distance runners can look forward to around 26 kilometres before receiving their medal at the finish line, while the medium-distance route covers about 14 kilometers. The shorter distances span either around seven or roughly four kilometers and can be completed either by running or walking (walking or Nordic walking). Cultural breaks invite you to pause for a while on all routes. At the finish line, everyone will receive a sparkling medal.

Goethe.Culture.Run

The Goethe.Culture.Run is not just about athletic performance – it also celebrates culture and history, two things that fascinated Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The medal awarded to finishers at the finish line would surely have thrilled him, as he was not only a master of words but also a passionate collector of coins and medals.

At the Goethe.Kultur.Lauf, the journey is the destination – a route that not only takes you through Weimar’s historic scenery but also offers eight special cultural breaks to give both body and mind a creative pause. Whether you listen to the sounds of young musicians or experience gripping scenes from Goethe’s Faust – each station offers a cultural surprise.

The Goethe.Kultur.Lauf is much more than just a running event. It is a journey to ourselves, a dialogue with the world, and a dance with our culture. Those who once grasp the magic surrounding the Goethe.Culture.Run know that the journey itself is the goal. "What comes from the heart, touches the heart." And so, the Goethe.Culture.Run is sprinkled with cultural stations that ignite the passion for both culture and running.
